Over the past three decades Royal Academician Fiona Rae has explored the possibilities of painting in a distinctive and dynamic body of work. She consistently sets herself strategic challenges, resulting in a constant reinvigoration of her practice. Recent work references the complexities and energy of our computer-dominated world, and our rapidly changing visual culture.

Works on paper allow Rae to work on a smaller scale in watercolour and acrylic. Categorised as ‘drawings’ these vibrant pictures feature similarly painterly strokes to Rae’s works on canvas but have a sense of softness by comparison. Although Rae’s gestures – distantly reminiscent of tropical birds, billowing clouds, and mini explosions – have a spontaneous feel, each brushstroke has to be carefully controlled when working in paint onto paper in this way.
Rae studied at Goldsmiths College from 1984–87. She participated in Freeze, the group show curated by Damien Hirst in 1988, and Sensation at the Royal Academy of Arts in 1997. She was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1991 and was appointed the first female Professor of Painting at the Royal Academy Schools in 2011. Rae has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries internationally, and her work is held in prestigious public and private collections worldwide. She lives and works in London.
